Hi, I am new to the forum and I am currently taking a system analysis and design class. I am trying to research the latest trends and recommendations for effective web user interface design. Any suggestions from those who know it best?

Basically, latest trends does not equal effective web user interface design, assuming you mean latest trends to mean doing things differently than before.

The most effective and most user friendly sites are those that are built using the conventions that have been built up over the past several years. Things like navigation at the top or left side of the page; links underlined; the logo in the upper left a link back to the home page. A good reference to use is Steve Krug's book, Don't Make Me Think. It will give you a lot to think about (in spite of the title :)).
