What browser are you using and why?
I am using IE 6.0 for all standard browsing purposes. I use netscape for PayPal and online banking because I have it tweaked for security purposes.
I also have multiple versions of IE and Netscape installed for design testing.

mozilla firefox 0.8 because its more flexible and easier to use than IE. its got built in search engines (i have google and dictionary.com) you can change how it looks, its got a toolbar for favorites. its faster than IE. i also have IE but i rarely use it
I use plain mozilla regularly, but sometimes IE for quick visits to sites or other stuff (such as visiting WDF ;)). It just loads a lot faster than mozilla for certain things.

i haven't noticed much difference in speed. i think mozilla looks a lot cooler to cuz you can change it all
Hmm, well I just like a simple design. I don't care too much about fancy stuff, as long as its fast. And what I mean about speed is that after you've played a game or something, mozilla does take a while to load up back while IE's a lot faster.

IE is more intergrated into the shell, so half of the resources it needs are already loaded into memory... So it enables a faster execution. I like IE, in fact, I personally think it renders pages better than the others, but thats my personal opinion. I use IE mainly, but just recently i have been using Firefox 0.8 purely for the tabbed-browsing feature, which is real handy on forums

Note: You have no choice on which browser you use: If you use Windows, you use IE. The reason is, Explorer.exe (Which you use to browse folders, drives, etc.) is now, in versions 98+, implemented with IE. So if you have Windows, you use IE.
Anyway, I use:
-IE
-Mozilla
-Netscape
-Advanced Explorer

its not like you have use IE. you can just use other browsers and set them as the default
What he means is that when viewing a folder in Windows Explorer for example, when you type in an URL in that address bar, IE automatically loads, and no matter what your default browser is, IE will still load.
There should be a way to change that....

right now im using firefix 0.8 because im on my home computer, normaly i use firebird 0.7, i prefer that over the newer version because it has less features so it runs faster,
anyway i love the plugins, especially mouse gestures, other than that i have the web developer toolbar and a few other things like editCSS whitch are usefull if im viewing a website with a stuipd color scheme or something, i can just delete the styles or change them to my liking

I'm useing IE 5.0 - mostly because I'm a D&D gamer and the big games do not work well above Windows '98. And I agree with Antaris - Windows makes it a hassle to use anything else.

Ditto on Opera. Been using it for a long time now. The ads don't bother me but if they do, just buy it. We're only talking $35.
Second to Opera for me is Firebird. Only reason I don't use it all the time is that the mouse gestures are just slightly different and I haven't got used to them yet. I keep doing the opera gesture and get confused when something different happens.
I have IE install. Not really for using for browsing. Just to check my PR with the google toolbar.

I just use IE 6.0, are there any advantages to using Mozilla and other browsers?
I use Mozilla 1.6
The main advantages for me are the built-in popup blocker, changeable skins/themes, and of course being able to search Google directly from the addressbar
David Bowley

I can do all that with the google tool bar, cept the skin changer thing, altho isn't security on IE bad?
Rincewind
02 Jul 2004, 09:19 AM
IE has got many security problems. But the real problem is that most users are un-aware of any security issues and so do silly things like open doc and exe file without vir scanning them or run pages with Active-x contols on them that install all sorts of nasties.
The main gains form the other browsers are
- Smaller hard disk footprint (take up less space)
- Lighter memory load
- Faster page rendering
- Improved w3c standards compliance
- Tabed browsing - (if you have several windows of IE open, then each one takes up a chunk of your memory. With a tabbed browser, you can have several pages open, but only one instance of the actual browser program in memory)
- Mouse gestures. Rather than click back, forward, new page and so on. You just make a wee flurry with the mouse and it does it. I've got completely hooked on these on opera and now can't live without them.
- Still activly developed - MS are not going to bring out an IE7. So IE is in effect a dead browser. Just like Netscape. So the problems with IE will remain, while the other browsers advance all the time (note: there will be a new browser in Longhorn - the next windows version - but you'll have to upgrade to Longhorn to use it. And longhorn will be 64 bit so you'll have to upgrade your entire system to use it. And even then, the standard browser will be quite basic. Though MS have not confirmed it, you will probably have to pay extra for the fully featured browser.)

I use a browser called Enigma, I was just searching for a new browser to dload and try and I got stuck on this one. I believe it is built on some version of IE, but here's some of the specs:
-Same surfing pace as IE
-Tabbed Browsing
-18 built in search engines(maybe like 6 of them im not too familiar with)
-Blends in with the Windows XP style better than other browsers
-Zooming features
-Built in pop up blocker
-Uses the same "Favorites" folder that IE uses
-Built-in Script pad(web page editor)
-Download Control
From using IE, this doesnt take long to get used to, the tabbed browsing and pop up blocker is definantly a plus. Download it at http://download.com.com/redir?pid=4291631&merid=65002&mfgid=65002&edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-2356-4291631&ontId=2356<ype=dl_dlnow&lop=link&destUrl=%2F3001-2356-4291631.html and give it a try

Oh I just realised I posted in this thread back then, and I was an IE user thru and thru, look how I've changed. There I was thinking IE was so great, what was I thinking.
Anyway, that Enigma looks interesting but it probably can't compete with Mozilla Firefox.

22 Jul 2004, 10:33 PM
only thing that I found that Enigma cant do that Firefox can do is change its appearance, but of course i only looked for it like 5 mins, dont got much free time on my comp these days. and the built in scripter i check out and its pretty nice, it color codes the html tages n such so its a little easier to edit with then notepad(I like making the whole site by code cuz when something goes wrong I know exactly where to go to fix it)

23 Jul 2004, 05:38 AM
Several advantages over Enigma (and Avant and other IE based browsers)
- Smaller memory footprint
- Fewer bugs (even though Firefox is still 0.9 beta)
- Better security - IE is full of holes.
- Higher standards compliance
- Faster page rendoring (not load time but rather draw time after loading)
- Open source - you don't like something, get the source code and make the changes yourself.

the bugs is one thing that makes me mad about firefox though. i know its still beta, but they left a lot of bugs out there. 0.8 had a lot less bugs and i wish i could have just kept that...

Most times it's not the browser, but rather the web site that is messed up. Use Opera 7.5 and find Overture's pages break. Also untill recently my bank's site only worked in IE cause their html was atrocious. At least the bank's fixed their site now. One site down, 3 billion to go.

I am using mozilla (currently version 1.8a3 which is a nightly build a few days old now). I use it for the fetures: tabbed browsing, integrated e-mail program, mouse gestures and many other wonderfull addons, such as stumble upon bar NEedleSearch toolbar and a few others I find quite usefull. I use it over opera because it's free and opensource and I tend to like that type of software. Also I found opera to run slower because of its large skins. Opera would be my second choice in broser under this one. (I have tried Firefox and enjoy it too, but like to use mozillas e-mail client and find it silly to have two seperate programs when i can use just one)

Firefox 1.0.1. But I'm on a Mac so my choices are really Firefox, Safari or Opera. Microsoft stopped development on the Mac version of IE about a year and a half ago so I seldom look at it. Only one site I tried to use required IE, Covad, and I dropped their service. Tabbed browsing is a big plus, as is the built in search box. The add-ons are also neat options, although I've only added a couple.
If I ran a Windows box I'd still opt for using Firefox, not just for the features but because it has fewer security problems than IE does (with IE being so closely tied to the OS).

When I surf the web I use either Mozilla 1.7.3 with MultiZilla 1.6.4 or Lynx (great for reading email from lame sites like Yahoo! - no Javascript or DOM)
I have many browsers here (KDE Konqueror 3.14, Opera 7.54, Firefox 1.0, MS IE 6.0) and by my opinion are ALL very lame compared to MultiZilla extension to Mozilla which is Swiss army knife browsing solution e. you can disable Javascript, meta redirects or images per tab basis, etc.
As new Slackware 10.1 CDs should arrive shortly, I will move to Mozilla 1.7.5 and newer Konqueror version
I personally dislike Firefox - I had problem to build from source, as it does not obey standard ./configure; make all; make install build procedure, and installs itself to $HOME dir - VERY lame
MultiZilla is, by the way, solution with more functionality than Firefox itself, and I need POP email client also.
Also, skins are very lame - I expect app to behave like rest of my desktop be it GTK, KDE or Windows
I like siple solutions, and I would be happy if some browser would use antique Athena or LessTif widgets instead of bulky KDE or GNOME libs. I have 768 MB RAM and don't expect system itself to use more than 64Mb (and it can be cut down to 8Mb only)
Aye, my previos computer was 486 with 16Mb, Linux 2.0/2.2 (SuSE 6.4/RedHat 5)

I use the latest version of firefox, because of the tabbed browsing and the hundreds of interesting and useful extensions. Occasionally, if I'm having problems with a site I'll use explorer.
Extension are the life beat of firefox and will be the reason that no other browser will be able to slow the popularity of this thing down. If the other browsers want to compete, they'll probably need to develop a similar community of extension builders. But I doubt any corporate browser will be able to do that, seeing as their code isn't open source.

I use Opera 9.01 the most, its just too damn fast. Though I also frequently use firefox 2.0 beta 2, and IE7 RC1. The developer toolbar plugin for IE7 is actually pretty badass, but the interface is just plain ugly (not to mention the still somewhat screwy css support).
Oh, and if anyone is using IE6..... wow.

- Mozilla Firefox 1.6 i believe
- Opera 9 (not sure of the version)
- Netscape (not too sure again what version)
I have all these installed to see what my sites look like on all browsers. But for the look of the browsers, Mozilla wins hands down. IE looks alright but could be better. Microsoft has learnt from FF in the fact that tabs are just awesome and they reduce clutter.

Firefox of course. It's got so many useful extensions that I couldn't browse without. I use it while developing sites because it's got so many nice developer tools (the developer toolbar is amazing I might add for anyone who's never used it).
I was a dedicated fan of Opera until I started discovering Firefox extensions. Opera is by far the best out of the box, but it doesn't have enough of my necessary extensions for me to use it often.
IE 7 was a failure in my mind. They had years since 6 to make a standards compliant browser, and they didn't. There was no excuse for them not supporting simple CSS like :before and :after. Come on Microsoft, CSS 2 has been around since 1998, you've had almost a decade.
To anyone using IE 6: do yourself a favor and stop. Now. Seriously. Stop reading this and go to www.opera.com or www.getfirefox.com and get a better browser. Then never touch IE again (unless you're a developer of course; we have no choice because we have to test in it). If you really need to know why, it's because your user interface is cluttered and out of date, it's the most insecure browser in common use, and it makes life a living hell for developers.
Oh, I almost forgot. When I'm using Linux, I also use Konqueror. It's everything IE should be.

IE 7 was Microsoft's way of saying, hey we should be cool like Firefox and Opera too. A failure on their end.
Anyway I use Firefox 2.0, Opera 9.0, sometimes Seamonkey 1.1, and rarely Konqueror if you'd believe it.
More Firefox because of Ad Block Plus and FiltersetG. But I am really into Opera because of the massive speed and security.
I have not used IE for awhile, but I have IE 7 installed for optimum IE-Tabbage when I really need it.

I installed the firefox and IE. It seems that virus likes to attack IE.
That's not entirely true. While IE may have more documented viruses, both browsers receive there share of attacks. The difference is Firefox is more secure, and is Open Source. Therefore, bugfixes are often released soon after, or, in some instances, before a virus has been exploited. Also, IE is integrated with Windows which often allows holes in Windows to affect IE as well.

IE7, as it has lots of useful features (http://www.uwec.edu/help/IE_7/addtl-feat.htm).
Just pointing out that the only feature listed here which isn't standard to any browser is the email to a friend button (firefox users can use stumble upon to get this functionality anyways). IE is currently years behind the other browsers; they've got a lot of work to do to catch up. If they would simply fix their rendering engine and standards support then maybe people wouldn't campain so hard against it. If only they cared.

Generally you cannot say whether IE is better or Mozilla. They both are standard browsers and without a powerful firewall and anti virus, you cannot ensure having a powerful, virus free system.
Please keep in mind that neither of the two browsers have a built in anti virus program, they are just browsers and need help to remain spyware and trojan free.

Other browsers has more features. What is good about Firefox is that it is like lego, you can add whatever you want to do it and make it your own. No other browser offers this flexibility.

I like Mozilla firefox. It is faster, secure and very easy to use. Features of Firefox are tabbed browsing, spell checker, incremental find, live bookmarking, an integrated download manager, keyboard shortcuts, and an integrated search system that uses Google. In firefox, webdevelopers can use their built in tools such as error console or the DOM Inspector or extensions such as Firebug.

I use plain mozilla regularly, but sometimes IE for quick visits to sites or other stuff (such as visiting WDF ). It just loads a lot faster than mozilla for certain things.

FireFox...well because IE is..... do I have to explain further?...
I use IE8 at work but only for work...they use Maximo software...which only correctly works in IE.. :( and that's a gamble sometimes...

I mainly use firefox. It is the best browswer as far as I'm concerned. I do use other browser, but usually just to test my css layouts.
