    PNG COmpressing

I have a picture that needs to have a transparent background and to the best of my knowledge only two formats support this, gif and png. I decided png because it salvages the color the best, however the files are pretty large especially because I am using them for my website. Anybody know if jpgs now support transparent backgrounds or if there is a way to compress my png files?

    Jpeg's don't support transparent backgrounds I'm afraid.

Your best best is as you say PNG or GIF

If I recall, didn't Fireworks have an option for PNG's that you could optimise the images? I'm sure it did! But then I've not play with fireworks for quite some time ...
