    Storing detailed user information

    hi,
I want to develop a database for a personalised gifts website, similar to this onehttp://www.borngifted.co.uk.
You see, when a product is ordered, it tends to have a few lines of text for a personal message, and I cant think of any way to store this information temporarily in a shopping cart.
analysing the cookies of borngifted.co.uk, there seems to be a lot of information being held, so would it be possible to store a user's shopping cart in server-side file for a set amount of time (similar to a cookie)?
    thanks for your help.
