What pictures am I allowed to use?

So I'm thinking about building a website that will serve as a hub of education resources on web development. I would like to include a page that has bios of industry leaders along with photos of each. Where, if anywhere, should I take these pictures from if I want to be safe about my rights to use them? Are there any other legal issues I could run into making a site like this?

You could get technical and contact the owners of said pictures. Or, you could use creativecommons.org. They also have a nifty image search feature.
