how to create diagonal lined patterns

hi, i saw this posted earlier http://www.wickham43.supanet.com/tu...background.html
on how to t make gradients but when i tried to make my own pattern (cause i need different colors) i couldnt get it to line up right. I even tried photoshop cs2's pattern maker under the filters menu but no luck. Is there some kind of trick to it?
    thanks.

I didn't make the image; I've never tried to make patterned images.
You link to my page doesn't work; maybe this one will:-

Both the gradiated image and the darker one have the same 45 degree angle in the pattern so that they will line up when one is under the other. The top one that goes from light to dark needs to have its full height; if it is cut off too short it won't have reached the same darkness as the one underneath.

Code downloaded to my PC will be deleted in due course.
WIN7; IE9, Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari for Windows; screen resolution usually 1366*768.
    Also IE6 on W98 with 800*600 and IE8 on Vista 1440*900.
