Link behavior in text navigation menu

How do you guys style text links in a navigation menu? I'm working on a couple of sites right now which both have text menus styled with CSS. I fully understand the three important parts of site navigation: where am I? where have I been? where can I go next? But after testing and going through my site, I'm finding it unsightly to have a nav menu with different colored/styled links, depending on what's been visited or not.

Anyone have any insight on this? Seen any text menus with link styling that works well? Let me know.

    Thanks.

My older web pages have the standard colors but now I tend to have the same colors for the link, visited and active (or just a slight difference), all different from normal text color so the link is obvious, and a contrasting color for hover.

I'm also using highlighted backgrounds of a slightly contrasting color on hover.
Code downloaded to my PC will be deleted in due course.
WIN7; IE9, Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari for Windows; screen resolution usually 1366*768.
    Also IE6 on W98 with 800*600 and IE8 on Vista 1440*900.
