Securing Files/Folders on server directory..?

Okay.. is creating a .htaccess file the best route to go to secure folders in my hosting directory? just so clients have to enter pw to access files to d/l?

what is the easiest way to make sure the client has to enter a password to download the files or access the files?

which would b e the best route to approach this ?
