Newbie needs help. Probably a simple mistake

First off... I realize this placeholder looks like crap & is poorly coded. However, I'm taking a Dreamweaver class in a week or so, so hopefully I won't need to ask these newbie questions.

The problem is... I can't type or place anything directly to the right of the left hand banner, or right below the top one.

The only place I can type is below the bottom of the left handed column.

You have used a table so just add text into the main td cell:-
