Would love some help

My technique is awful, admittedly, but I am trying to make this site work using slices and maps in ps and dw.

My question is, the three main images take forever to load, so the seemless transition from faces/places/things is shattered. I wanted to optimize the photos as slices, but ps only allows square slices. How else might I be able to optimize the three images so that they don't take so long to switch back and forth, but retain the quality, at least of the embedded photos?

In general I hate the slicing feature in Photoshop. I always manually cut everything when I am dicing a design for HTML. The feature may actually be cool - but I am not patient enough to train myself to give up the freedom.
