Web 2.0 design - background help

I know how to do repeating horizontal backgrounds, however I'm not sure how to go about this repeat Y axis background on this blog based on wordpress.

How do i make those side collumn shadows? I'm aware it's a repeating background but by having that does that mean that my table has to be set at a certain length?

I'm also not sure what the div tablets are all about, you can draw them in dreamweaver but how do you can them to fit well and sync together for viewing at various resolutions?
