Pulling in a db field to create a hyperlinked list.

I am new to the scripting side of web design and was wondering if someone could help me. I am looking to create a server side script, I guess, to pull in field from a database, sort the results in ascending order and then display the results as a table in the header of a web page. I would also like to create links from each entry to a specific document.

Could someone point me in the right direction to get started?
