I'm thinking of becoming a web designer I've been told that if I do I have to buy my own software and not cracked software or i'll be sued is that true?

You've answered your own question really I think you need to look at what cracked software is. It's software where trial periods or access codes have been bypassed so you can use the full version instead of paying for it. So you are using the software illegally.

I suggest you read the terms and conditions for the trial program of adobe photoshop(which btw lets you use it for 30 days).

Try photoshop, there are other programs aswell but photoshop is the best that I am aware of.
Granted if you did obtain an illegal copy I think they would be hard pressed to track you down. But in a blunt way of answering your question, yes you can be sued if the company find out you have illegal copies of their software. It's called stealing.
