Help with securing certain directories to certain users: Joomla

I just "created" a Joomla website that has a login form. I want users to be able to login using that form on the homepage and then be able to access certain secure documents on the web server. I want to have different groups of access. For example, I want one person to be able to access files in folder A, while another person can access files in folders A and B, and another can access B and C, etc... I also want to set it up so that once they are logged in, they don't have to type in their password again that session. Is what I am describing possible?
