Event Registration Questions

I straddle that line between newb and intermediate in my PHP skills. I'm in the process of setting up a site for a non-profit and was thinking of skinning a wordpress site for them.

I've never implemented an event registration system before and I'm wondering first what are the options for this. The system needs to be able to handle payments.

I've looked through some Wordpress plugins, but they seem rather rudimentary. Anyone have any advice/experience they could give me? Much appreciated.

Ive never touched Wordpress but have implemented a Drupal + Ubercart build which is a great tool for e-commerce malarkey
