Question about new website and customers

Hi,
If you want to start a love website or an ebay-like website, how can you manage to get people/customers in the website ?
Because if you launch the website and you have nobody selling things or looking for love, why the other people would like to subscribe even for free ?

I made a guy a dating website a while ago. He added 80 members a day for a month himself to simulate activity. Eventually it took off... at least I think it did, hard to tell if he has stopped ha.

For an ebay like website start it off for free to post products and make sure all products are sold.. people will soon come back to sell more etc.
